where m(id) editors tell all

This past Monday, two women were detained after trying to shoplift from a Walmart in Des Moines, IA, according to the Chicago Tribune. Their contraband included shoes, dresses, socks and diapers, totaled at 122 items and had an overall worth of $1,000.

Moral of the story:  If you're over the speedy checkout line limit, there's a good chance that your five-finger discount is  less likely to hold up.

Things Clint Eastwood has said:

"Go ahead, make my day."

"You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?"

"Michigan will be the next film capital."

(Check out the Detroit Free Press for more on this last - and most recent - saying.)

Or do you flounder/founder in the ocean of words?

Read this paragraph and pick the right word to see how much you actually know...

Sometimes, when I'm reading, I just can't figure out whether a word has a positive or negative connotation/denotation!  I just get altogether/all together baffled and usually end up trying to use the grammar/syntax to figure out what the word implies/infers.  My method isn't very expedient/expeditious, and I usually feel pitiable/pitiful until I get a dictionary.  But, after I've augmented/supplemented my verbal knowledge by looking up the word, I feel better because I know that no one can gibe/jibe at me anymore for misusing it.

How'd you do?  Confounded/Confused by these words' actual usage?  Then the Artful Nuance by Rod L. Evans is for you.  Clearly demonstrating proper usage for some of English's most common mishaps, this book will have you bragging/boasting to your friends about your oh-so-proper vocabulary in no time.

Answer Key:

flounder, connotation, altogether, syntax, infers, expeditious, pitiable, augmented, gibe, confused, boasting

an introduction of sorts

So even though I'm pretty sure that the only people who have visited  this website are those who write for it (and my mom, of course), I figured I should still do a quick introductory entry to get the blog portion of m(id) going...

For those of you who don't already know, m(id) is my attempt to 1) graduate with honors at Albion College, 2) fill a void that I've noticed in the media industry and most importantly, 3) follow through with the goal of starting my own magazine (which is something that I've wanted to do since the 7th grade). Granted, my twelve-year-old self never would have considered launching a publication via the web, but given the current trends and condition of magazines and print journalism in general, my present self can't imagine doing it any other way.

Since I'm still a novice in the area of web development, this site will probably change drastically over the next few months. I'm using a CMS program called Joomla, and I'm still in the trial-and-error stage with most of the extensions and components. One day, the Arts & Crafts column will be a photo gallery and I'll figure out why everything looks completely different than it should on Internet Explorer (editor's recommendation: visit this website with Safari or Firefox for the time being). Until then, I hope that you can enjoy m(id) for its content without being too distracted from its presentation.
