Sticky Fingers

E-mail Print PDF

It turns out there's more a girl can do with her photos than post them on Facebook. With less than ten dollars to spend and two hours to spare, Molly Anne Gainey demonstrates how to turn your favorite snapshot into its own adhesive sticker.

Supplies:

  • One black & white image printed out on computer paper
  • Modge Podge (this can be purchased at most craft stores for around $5)
  • One medium-sized poly-foam paintbrush (this usually comes in a multi-sized pack for about $3)
  • One Styrofoam plate (a regular plate can also be used, but be sure to be extra careful in step 4)
  • 1/4 cup water
Tools:
  • Blow-dryer
  • Scanner/printer
  • Scissors

Steo 1 Step 1. Scan desired photo onto regular printer paper. Make sure to print photo in black and white (a photo in color will not properly adhere to the Mod Podge). Step 2 Step 2. Apply a thin coat of Modge Podge to the front of photocopy. If the liquid bubbles you are pushing too hard and using too much Mod Podge. Wait for layer to dry. Repeat 20 times. Tip: It should take between 5-10 minutes for each layer to properly dry (use a blow-dryer to speed up the process!). Step 3 Step 3. Once dry, place photo face down in the center of a Styrofoam plate (excess paper can hang off the plate). Pour room temperature water onto the plate, or leave plate under a running faucet, until photo is completely saturated with water. Step 4 Step 4. Once the photo is completely saturated, gently rub off the paper from the image. Don’t worry – the image will stay on the Modge Podge glue! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PEEL. The paper should ball up and can be cleaned away by pouring more water over the image. Step 5 Step 5. Allow glue to completely dry. This should take about 15-20 minutes, but the use of a blow-dryer set on low will help speed up the process. When you’re ready to place your sticker (on a book, a friend, etc.), slowly peel image off of plate. If you’ve done this correctly, the sticker will be transparent with the exception of the image!

Editor's Note: You may have to repeat steps 3-5 for the image to be completely transparent.
